Cadillac Tax Delayed: What It Means for Unions
In response to growing concerns raised by both labor and management groups, Congress passed a law in December 2015 that delayed the start of the Affordable Care Act’s “Cadillac Tax” for two years, until Jan.1, 2020. The Cadillac Tax is a provision of the Affordable Care Act that would impose a 40 percent excise tax on the excess of the cost of an employer-sponsored health plan over a specified threshold.

Temple Adjunct Professors Win Union Representation
On Nov. 25, 2015, Temple’s adjunct faculty voted in favor of union representation by a more than two to one majority. The 1,400 adjunct faculty joined the American Federation of Teachers affiliate, Temple Association of University Professionals, which already represented 1,400 full-time faculty members at the school.

Report: Public Sector Labor Unions Promote Economic Security and Equality for Women
The reality that women who are part of a unionized workforce have better wages and benefits than their non-unionized counterparts has long been anecdotally accepted by those of us who work with, are part of, and represent labor unions. A report issued in November 2015 by the National Women's Law Center, however, provides the numbers that show just how significantly public sector labor unions benefit women, in terms of both pay and benefits.

IRS Extends Deadlines for ACA Reporting
The IRS recently extended two Affordable Care Act (ACA) deadlines for employers and other providers of health coverage to report minimum essential coverage and for employers to report offers of health coverage to full-time employees. Providers subject to this requirement include insurers, employers who offer self-insured coverage and multiemployer health and welfare funds.

NLRB Throws Flag at Northwestern Football Players
A unanimous 2015 decision of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ended the union organizing effort of Northwestern University’s scholarship football players. The board dismissed the players’ election petition and consigned the sealed results of their April 25, 2014 election to the dust bin.
