Willig, Williams & Davidson Partner Discusses Impact of Janus Decision

December 12, 2018

Labor and employment attorneyPHILADELPHIA (December 2018) – Labor and employment attorney Lauren M. Hoye of Willig, Williams & Davidson recently participated on a panel discussing the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Janus v. AFSCME.

Held on Dec. 4 in Harrisburg, the meeting of the Central PA chapter of the Labor & Employment Relations Association focused on the impact of the June 27, 2018 Janus decision. The case was expected to have a wide-ranging impact on public sector labor relations in the United States. The Court held that it is unconstitutional in the public sector to require non-members to pay fair share fees to defray the costs of things such as collective bargaining, even when the union’s efforts benefit members and non-members alike.

Hoye and other panel members addressed the decision’s effect on labor-management relations and the impact of the decision on the way unions operate. The discussion covered trends seen in union membership since the decision, union strategies for responding to the Janus decision, and management’s perspective on the decision.

A partner at Willig, Williams & Davidson, Hoye focuses her practice on representation of labor unions and individual employees and is a passionate advocate for working people. She has served as a speaker and/or instructor for the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board and Bureau of Mediation, the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee, and the Labor and Employment Relations Association, as well as other organizations. She has been named a Pennsylvania Rising Star in Thomson Reuters’ Super Lawyers program every year since 2014.
