Nursing Home Strike

A majority of the 130 unionized workers at St. Monica Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare, a nursing home in South Philadelphia hit hard by the coronavirus, voted in April to authorize a strike.

The group of District 1199C direct-care and service workers, represented by Philadelphia labor law firm Willig, William & Davidson, raised concerns over health and safety issues throughout the 180-bed facility.

According to interviews with four workers and the union’s attorney Ryan Hancock, staff lack proper personal protective equipment, the nursing home was slow to begin isolating coronavirus patients, and residents who have tested positive are still sharing rooms with those who have not.

Across the country, health-care workers, along with other types of essential workers, have been sounding the alarm on unsafe working conditions since the pandemic began. At the time of the vote to strike, there have not been widespread strikes among medical workers, making the situation at St. Monica’s a test case.
