Attorney Michael Dryden Discusses Firefighter’s Fight for Benefits in Philadelphia Inquirer

Willig, Williams & Davidson partner Michael Dryden recently discussed his client’s fight for benefits in a Philadelphia Inquirer article entitled “Philly needs to do right by a fire chief dying of cancer.”

The article highlights Philadelphia Fire Department battalion chief John Narkin’s battle with cancer he believes he contracted as a firefighter. When Narkin applied for benefits under the Firefighters Cancer Presumption Act, his request was denied in less than a week by the city’s Office of Risk Management. Narkin and Dryden recently testified at a City Council subcommittee on health and public welfare about the need for Narkin’s cancer to be classified as job-related, which will allow his spouse to receive the maximum benefits possible after he dies.

“The Fire Department over the last several years has been taking steps to protect firefighters from carcinogens more. But it seems like the city forgets that people like John Narkin served the city before those changes were made,” Dryden told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
