Pennsylvania Labor and Employment Law Attorney Alaine S. Williams Joins Panel at University of Pennsylvania Law School's Public Interest Week

April 17, 2013

Pennsylvania labor and employment lawyer, Alaine S. Williams of Willig, Williams & Davidson served as a panelist at the session, “Exploring the Working World: How to Begin a Career in Labor and Employment Law” at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in March. The dynamic and well-attended session was part of the University’s “Public Interest Week,” hosted by Toll Public Interest Center’s (TPIC) Employment Advocacy Project and the Penn Law Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

Public Interest Week at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, organized by TPIC is a full week of activities showcasing public interest practitioners, alumni, and an honorary Fellow in Residence. Its theme this year was “The Power of Public Interest.” The events are a part of Penn Law’s year-round commitment to public service and effort to engage students to learn about critical justice issues and potential public interest careers.

During the panel session with the Penn Law students, Williams offered her advice. She said, “Do work you care about.  Being a lawyer is very hard work and it never gets any easier. I have been practicing more than 30 years and I work as hard today as I did 20 years ago. Given the long hours and diligence required, it is very important to care about what it is you do and who you do it with. I have been fortunate enough to practice with people I care deeply about and have represented the same union clients for many, many years. We have great respect for each other and are focused on achieving the same purpose. That makes all of the hard work very worthwhile.”

Williams, a partner at Willig, Williams & Davidson for 27 years who focuses on labor and employment law was a perfect choice for a panelist. Her career has been committed to serving the public interest. As a labor and employment law attorney in Pennsylvania, she has represented public sector labor unions and protected the rights of workers. Most notably, her efforts have included drafting and defending Pennsylvania legislation on behalf of public sector labor unions to require all nonmembers in a bargaining unit to pay fair share fees for benefits negotiated on their behalf, thereby enhancing the economic and political power of public sector unions in Pennsylvania. In addition to her career as a labor and employment attorney, Williams is a frequent lecturer and has authored articles addressing employee rights, constitutional matters and race and gender discrimination.

Williams has been consistently selected by her peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® in the fields of Employment and Labor Law since 1999. Since 2004, she has also been consistently named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer by Thomson Reuters, published annually in Philadelphia magazine. American Lawyer Media and Martindale-Hubbell™ selected her as a "2013 Top Rated Lawyer." Prior to achieving her LL.M. at Columbia University, Williams received her J.D. from Florida State University where she served as the editor of Law Review and received the Tubbs MD/JD Memorial Award for Commitment to Public Service.
