Willig, Williams & Davidson PA Lawyer Addresses Pennsylvania Public Safety Issues & the State's Charter School Funding System

April 11, 2012

Willig, Williams & Davidson partner and Pennsylvania labor law lawyer Irwin W. Aronson was the Wednesday, Apr. 11, 2012 opening guest on The Rick Smith Show, “Where Working People Come to Talk.”

Aronson and Smith discussed a new report from Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner about Pennsylvania's looming public safety crises with thousands of bridges, overpasses, roadways and infrastructure in perilous states of disrepair, suffering from years of neglect and deferred necessary maintenance. Aronson noted that the Corbett administration budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year fails to address this scary situation. He also discussed recent action taken by the governor and state legislature in Washington State, that just adopted a dedicated $1 billion bond issue to address similar road and bridge issues there, in which the state is, "[T]aking advantage of historic low interest rates, creating valuable and vital jobs, and investing in a safer and more secure future."

Aronson and Smith went on to discuss the multi-billion dollar bilking of Pennsylvania taxpayers by charter school businesses that get paid a state mandated payment for every student they register without regard to the amount these profiteers actually invest in our children. Aronson estimated that completely taxpayer-funded charter school companies actually spend, on average, in excess of $3,000 less per public school student annually than do school district-operated schools...and that, "[T]he charter profiteers pocket that money with absolutely no taxpayer accountability for how they handle and spend public funds." Based on recent news reports Aronson estimated that this legally flawed and fiscally irresponsible funding system is stealing as much as $100 million each year of the taxpayers' money that is intended to fund quality education for Pennsylvania's most precious resource, our children. Irwin stated categorically that the Corbett administration and a group of legislative charter school financial scammers are turning a blind eye to what should be recognized as a wholesale theft of taxpayer money.
